Midsummer In Sweden

Did you know that in Sweden we celebrate something called Midsummer?

Midsummer is a traditional Swedish holiday that has its roots in ancient pagan traditions and is one of the most celebrated holidays in the country. Originally, it was a festival to mark the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and to honor the return of nature and fertility.

Midsummer's Eve always falls on a Friday between the 19th and 25th of June and is an official public holiday in Sweden. Traditionally, Midsummer is celebrated with various rituals and activities that are characteristic of this celebration. Here are some of the common elements:

Maypole: A decorated pole is raised on a grassy area or dance floor. Participants adorn the maypole with flowers and leaves and dance around it to traditional Midsummer songs.

Flower wreaths: Many people, especially children, make flower wreaths to wear on their heads during the festivities. It is common to use wildflowers and greenery to create these wreaths.

Dance and music: Midsummer dancing is an important part of the celebration. Folk dances like "The Little Frogs" and "The Little Crow of the Priest" are popular. Traditional Swedish Midsummer songs are played and sung during the festivities.

Food and drinks: A traditional Midsummer meal often consists of new potatoes, pickled herring, sour cream, chives, and strawberries. Many people also drink snaps, a flavored spirit, with the meal.

Outdoor activities: Midsummer's Day is often spent outdoors with family and friends. Many people go to the countryside or the archipelago to enjoy nature, play games, and have picnics.
